Childproofing Your Home
Young children (especially toddlers) can easily find areas with potential electrical hazards. Make sure to take these steps to childproof your home:
- Cover all outlets throughout your home
- Check wires to make sure they're insulated
- Move or tuck away wires from reach
- Install child safety locks and store appliances in cabinets when not in use
- Avoid using electric appliances in areas of your home with water (like bathrooms)
Teaching Electrical Safety
Children are naturally curious so it's important to talk with them about how to stay safe around electricity (both inside and outdoors). Start here:
- Water and electricity don't mix. Never play with or use electronics around water
- Only plugs. Don't stick anything except for a plug in an outlet
- Don't touch wires or cords
- Look up before you climb trees to make sure there are no power lines
