Our Sustainable Practices
Working hard to empower a better future for our customers and our community.
Our Commitment
Our sustainability strategy is designed to ensure that our short-term initiatives align with long-term goals.
Evergy’s mission – to empower a better future – is accomplished by advancing our strategic pillars of affordability, reliability and sustainability.
Sustainability has consistently been at the forefront of our business. Evergy was created from a merger between companies that have been within the communities we serve for more than 125 years. To sustain our company, we believe in a balanced approach and are committed to adapting as the market changes. From Evergy’s grid resiliency investments and our all-the-above approach to generation and demand-side management, to our focus on community engagement and customer support, we work every day to provide reliable and affordable energy – sustainably – for communities today and for years to come.
Sustainable Value
Evergy is focused on providing reliable, affordable and sustainable energy to our customers, supported by a workforce that supports the communities we serve. We're embracing a diverse electric generation portfolio and adopting new technologies that empower our customers to manage their energy use in ways that suit their needs.
Our ongoing projects are currently laying the foundation for safe, affordable and reliable energy that is accessible to our communities and customers. Our goal is to foster a vibrant, thriving community for future generations.
Energy and Environmental Stewardship
We aspire to have a balanced generation portfolio that reflects the input of regulators and stakeholders and integrates into our balanced generation approach. Evergy’s most recent IRP reflects our ongoing investment in a mix of resources as part of an "all-of-the-above" generation portfolio strategy - advancing and balancing the objectives of affordability, reliability and sustainability.
Through teamwork and dedication, we continue to deliver on our strategic plan to best position Evergy to support growth and economic development opportunities in our region. Evergy is also focused on preserving and conserving water resources through environmental management practices. Major facilities are located near rivers or have large cooling lakes to ensure water availability.
We understand the value that these shared water resources provide to our communities. These reservoirs provide public access to approximately 11,025 acres of water resources for tourism and recreation while providing food and shelter for a variety of wildlife species.
While Evergy withdraws billions of gallons of water each year, 95% of that water is returned to the environment for downstream use. To reduce withdrawals, Evergy continues to consider ways to decrease water use through improved water recycling at generation sites and in alignment with Evergy's Water Resources Policy.

Consumables and Recycling
Our waste management approach includes implementing processes and procedures to minimize waste generation, encourage recycling and reuse where feasible, and ensure proper disposal of non-recyclable waste. These practices are designed to comply with all state and federal regulations governing waste activities.
As part of our recycling efforts, Evergy’s Green Team reuses retired electrical poles for walking trails, bee nesting boxes, bird houses, and so much more.

During operations of coal-fired generation plants, Evergy produces coal combustion residuals (CCR), including fly ash, gypsum, and bottom ash/slag. Evergy strives to recycle CCRs as useful product whenever feasible and protective of human health and the environment. If disposal is necessary, Evergy manages CCRs in disposal units regulated by both state and federal law.
In 2024, Evergy, along with our partners, was able to beneficially use more than 282,500 tons of CCR in the production of materials such as cement and roofing tiles. Overall, 37% of all CCR Evergy generated was repurposed in the beneficial use market. Evergy maintains and complies with written operating procedures when disposing of CCR at company owned disposal sites.
Each site has published compliance reports, as well as a method for public outreach on the Evergy CCR Rule Compliance Data and Information public website.

* Evergy's net-zero goal includes scope 1 and scope 2 emissions. The trajectory and timing of reaching our net-zero goals depend on many external factors, including enabling technology developments, the reliability of the power grid, availability of transmission capacity, supportive energy policies and regulations, and other factors. These external factors are outside of Evergy’s control, and without these enabling factors, we cannot be certain about the achievement of Evergy’s long-term emissions-reduction goals.
