What Does a Lineman Do?

An Evergy lineman plays a vital role in maintaining and repairing electrical power systems and ensuring reliable service for communities. Our highly skilled crews handle the installation, inspection and maintenance of power lines and utility poles, working at heights to keep electricity flowing safely. Whether responding to outages or performing routine system upgrades, Evergy linemen are committed to delivering dependable energy solutions while prioritizing safety and efficiency.

  • Earn a high school diploma or GED with at least one year of algebra as math skills are essential for electrical work
  • Pass an aptitude test to demonstrate your ability to handle technical tasks
  • Obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL) to be able to operate bucket trucks and other specialized vehicles
  • Attend a trade school or lineman training program that will provide hands-on experience and foundational knowledge
  • Complete Evergy’s apprenticeship program to gain real-world training under experienced professionals
  • Obtain necessary certifications including, but not limited to, OSHA safety training, first aid, and electrical certifications
  • Develop physical fitness and climbing skills to be able to work at the heights and challenging conditions linemen often face

Edison Electric Institute (EEI) provides online practice tests to help reduce testing anxiety for the following positions:

  • Clerical support and administrative positions (SASS)
  • Construction and skilled trades, apprentice, fleet services, shop helper, auto mechanic positions (CAST)
  • System operator, power dispatching, distribution dispatcher positions (SO/PD II)
  • Technician, general design positions (TECH)
  • Power plant helper, operator positions (POSS)
  • Power plant maintenance positions (MASS)
